The SAIRLA-funded University of Lund-led research project ‘AFRINT IV’ is analysing long-term data from smallholders in Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia to understand how gender, generation, and land-holding size affect their capacity to increase agricultural productivity. This background note assesses the policy frameworks in the three countries in terms of support to sustainability, the inclusion of gender and age, intra-household relations and the role of local institutions.
