Research and learning for sustainable intensification of smallholder livestock value chains (ResLeSS)

The ResLeSS project aims to to contribute to a more equitable and environmentally sustainable livestock production in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and Tanzania by providing decision-makers and investors in the sector with the evidence and tools needed to manage trade-offs between increased production and environmental impact.

The project is exploring three fundamental characteristics of smallholder livestock production:

1. The environmental impacts of livestock production;
2. The benefits of smallholder livestock rearing;
3. Smallholder decisions concerning the trade-off between production and environmental impact.

Environment and livelihood change is analysed using the CLEANED framework which provides a rapid assessment of livestock production system changes in data poor environments undergoing fast change.
